I Think He Needs a Better Holster

It's never a good thing to be staring down the barrel of your own gun.

From the Dallas Morning News:

By Jon Nielsen

Authorities have arrested the man believed to have broken into Maypearl city hall and attempted to shoot the town’s police chief with his own gun...

...According to the probable cause affidavit, Chief Lester Taylor sat at his desk at city hall about 5:30 a.m. Sept. 15 when a man, later identified by police as Mr. Powell, broke through a door. He told the chief that he was in an “accident” and needed help.

Chief Taylor asked to see the man’s driver’s license, and the pair walked to an adjoining garage area. That’s when Mr. Powell wrestled the chief’s gun away and pointed it at him.

Mr. Powell pulled the trigger of the Browning 9mm several times, but the gun never fired, according to the affidavit. It’s unclear why the loaded gun didn’t go off.
First I would offer that Chief Taylor could make good use of a Blackhawk Level 3 SERPA Auto Lock Duty Holster.

Level 3 SERPA Auto Lock Duty Holster

If the Chief had this holster on his side, the goblin would not have gotten the pistol.

The next thing I found interesting was the fact that "Mr. Powell pulled the trigger of the Browning 9mm several times, but the gun never fired..." I'll just about bet you that Chief Taylor was carrying a Hi-Power and the goblin couldn't figure out the thumb safety. If the Chief had been carrying a Glock, he might very well be dead right now.

Update: I have confirmed that the pistol was a Browning Hi Power.

If he was indeed carrying a Browning then Blackhawk doesn't make a Level 3 retention holster for it.

Yeah I know, but they will be soon.

If he was a police chief and not a gunny he could even have been carrying in Condition 3 (no cartridge chambered) and the goblin would have had to rack the slide before pulling the trigger.

I had never really considered this angle of the choice between manual safety/no manual safety (I own a Glock and it's the only firearm I've ever owned - I know, I'm still a rookie gunny), but this really makes me think hard about it.

Hey jt, welcome back. It has been awhile.

Bob, I am trying to contact the Chief to find out his condition of carry. I'll update when I can.

What I found funny was the media saying "It's unclear why the loaded gun didn't go off"

Because those sneaky guns will DO that, you know.
