WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is pushing for adoption of an amendment that would provide $2 billion in funding for the National Guard and Reserve forces. In recent years, these forces have faced substantial shortfalls in equipment, and the stimulus bill currently on the Senate floor contains no funding to remedy this problem. Sen. Cornyn’s amendment would eliminate $2 billion in wasteful spending and use the same amount to fund the purchase of new equipment for the National Guard and Reserve, providing them with much-needed modern equipment and better enabling them to meet mission and readiness requirements. In addition, this funding would have to be expended by the end of fiscal year 2010, providing a stimulative effect to the U.S. economy.More funding for the National Guard and Reserves is an issue that needs to be addressed, but not in this bill. H.R. 1 is a horrendous piece of legislation and can not be fixed through amendments. This bill needs to stopped.
The debt load we are forcing upon the shoulders of our grandchildren is not only irresponsible, it is immoral. The fact that this debt comes with greater .gov control of our economy and with the nationalization of financial institutions should scare the living bejesus out of any freedom loving American.
It was .gov meddling that got us into this mess, .gov meddling will only make it worse. A true economic stimulus package will be one that gets the .gov out of the way of the American Business man or woman and allows them to build businesses, create wealth and provide jobs. The current stimulus package does none of this.
Again, HR 1 can not be fixed with amendments, it must be stopped. Senators Hutchison and Cornyn, we are counting on you to do your very best to see that this bill is left on the Senate floor.
